Which key do you have?
Cars built before the late 1990s use a plain metal key that only needs cutting. From roughly 1998 onward most cars carry a transponder chip in the plastic head that has to be programmed to the immobilizer or the engine will not start. Remote-head keys add lock and unlock buttons to that chip. Push-to-start cars use a smart key or proximity fob that talks to the car wirelessly. Each type needs different equipment, and our technicians carry all of it.
You do not need to know which one you have. Tell the dispatcher the make, model and year and we will know, and we will quote the right price for it. Our brand pages below list the key types by year for every make we service.
All keys lost: how we make a key from nothing
With no key to copy, the technician reads the lock or retrieves the key code from the vehicle identification number, cuts a fresh blade, then programs the chip or fob through the car's diagnostic port. On most makes this happens at your car in under an hour. A few makes and model years lock programming to the manufacturer; we tell you honestly when that is the case rather than taking the job and failing.
Bring your registration or title and a photo ID. We only make keys for a vehicle's owner or an authorized driver.
- Most Honda, Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, GM and Chrysler keys programmed on site
- Laser-cut high-security blades cut on our mobile machine
- Lost keys erased from the immobilizer so a found key cannot start your car
Why a locksmith instead of the dealer
The dealer needs the car brought in, often orders the key, and charges dealership labor for the programming. We come to the car, carry the key stock, and finish the same visit. For most makes the total is well under the dealer's price, and the key is the same quality. The exceptions are a handful of European models where the manufacturer restricts key data; we say so up front.

Questions we hear every day
Can you make a car key without the original?
Yes. This is called an all-keys-lost job. We cut a new blade from the lock or the key code and program the chip or fob at your car. Have your registration and ID ready.
How much does it cost to replace a car key in Jacksonville?
It depends on the key type. A plain blade key is the least expensive, a transponder key costs more because of the chip and programming, and a smart fob costs the most. We quote the exact price for your make and year before we drive.
Can I get a key made with just my VIN?
The VIN lets us retrieve the key code for many makes, which is one step in making a key. You still need to prove ownership, and the chip or fob still has to be programmed at the car, which is why we come to you.
Can AutoZone or a hardware store make my key?
They can copy some basic and transponder keys if you already have a working one. They cannot make a key when all keys are lost, cut most laser-cut blades, or program smart fobs. That is what a mobile automotive locksmith is for.
