Key types by year

Which Toyota key do you have?

Model yearsKey typeWhat that means for replacement
Before 1998Plain metal keyCut from the lock or key code, no programming. Common on older Tacomas and 4Runners still on Jacksonville roads.
1998 to 2010Transponder key (4C, then 4D chip)Chip in the head, edge-cut blade. Programmed on site; all-keys-lost is straightforward with the right tool.
2010 to 2013G-chip transponder keyMarked with a small G on the blade. Needs the correct G blank; using the older 4D blank fails to program.
2013 onwardH-chip transponder or 8A smart keyBlade keys carry an H stamp; push-to-start cars use a smart fob. Both program on site, though all-keys-lost on some H-chip years takes a longer reset procedure that we plan for on the phone.

How Toyota key programming works

Toyota programming happens through the diagnostic port. Duplicates pair next to a working key in minutes. All-keys-lost on 4C, 4D and G systems is a code retrieval plus an immobilizer registration. On some 2013 to 2018 H-chip and early smart-key models the immobilizer must be reset first, which adds time at the car; we tell you that up front and bring the equipment so it is one visit.

Things to know before you call about a Toyota

  • The G and H stamps on a Toyota blade matter: the wrong blank looks identical and will cut fine but never program.
  • Prius smart keys from 2004 to 2009 have their own procedure and a slot in the dash for a dead fob; if the car says key not detected, insert the fob in the slot and press start before calling.
  • Toyota all-keys-lost on some 2013 to 2018 models requires an immobilizer reset that a hardware store or kiosk cannot perform; only a locksmith or dealer can.

Pricing for Toyota keys

Plain Toyota keys are inexpensive, 4D and G chip keys cost more for the chip and programming, H-chip and smart keys cost the most. Every price is well below the dealer once their programming labor is included, and the car does not move.

Toyota key questions

Can you make a key for my Toyota if I lost both?

Yes. We retrieve the code, cut the blade and register the new key or fob at the car. On some 2013 and newer models an immobilizer reset is part of the job; we plan for it when you call.

Is my Toyota key a G or an H chip?

Look at the blade near the head for a small stamped G or H. If there is no letter and the car is 2010 or older, it is a 4C or 4D key. Tell the dispatcher the model year and we bring the right blank regardless.

Do you program Toyota smart keys?

Yes, on site, including erasing a lost fob so it cannot start the car.
