How we open a locked car without damage

Every technician carries professional lockout tools: inflatable wedges to create a gap without bending the frame, long-reach tools to trigger the unlock button or pull the handle, and lishi picks for the door cylinder on cars that still have one. The coat hanger trick you may have seen ruins weather stripping and can catch the wiring for side airbags in the door; we do not do it, and you should not let anyone else try it either.

Newer cars with deadlocking, where the interior handle is disabled once locked from outside, take a different approach through the cylinder. The tech knows which method your model needs before arriving, because you told the dispatcher what you drive.

Keys locked in the trunk

On most cars opening the door is enough, because the trunk release inside does the rest. On some models the trunk stays locked when the car is locked from outside, and the rear seats may not fold. We open those too, using the key code or by working the trunk lock directly. Tell the dispatcher it is a trunk job so the right tools come out.

Lost the key completely?
