How Mercedes-Benz key programming works

Every Mercedes key is coded to the car's electronic ignition switch using data held by Mercedes-Benz. For older FBS3 cars our technicians can assess whether an on-site key or a dealer-ordered key is the faster and cheaper route; for FBS4 cars the key comes from the dealer, and we tell you that on the phone so you do not pay for a visit that cannot end in a working key.

Things to know before you call about a Mercedes-Benz

  • If a Mercedes locksmith promises a same-day key for a 2016 or newer car without mentioning the dealer, be cautious; the manufacturer controls that key data.
  • A Mercedes key that stops working after getting wet or dropped often has a damaged shell or battery contact, not a dead key; a repair is far cheaper than an ordered key.
  • Sprinter vans sold as Dodge or Freightliner before 2010 use Mercedes systems too; the same rules apply.

Where we can make the key on site it costs less than the dealer route. Where the dealer must supply the key, we tell you before booking and handle the lockout or key repair at our normal flat rates so you are not paying twice.

Mercedes-Benz key questions

Do I need to tow my Mercedes to the dealer for a key?

For most 2015 and newer models the key itself must be ordered through Mercedes, but you rarely need a tow: we open the car, and the dealer can often deliver or program the ordered key. For older models we may be able to make the key on site.

Can you open my Mercedes if I am locked out?

Yes. Lockouts on every Mercedes model year are done at the car without damage, at a flat price quoted on the phone.

My Mercedes key is cracked but works. Can you fix it?

Yes. We replace the shell and move the electronics over, which keeps your coded key working without ordering a new one.
